France Extends Border Checks
France has become the latest European country to continue checks on its borders with other European countries.
EuroNews reported that France has informed the European Union that the country will extend the heightened checks on its borders with Belgium, Spain, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy from November 1, 2024 and that they will remain in place until April 2025.
Travelers were warned to expect queues and disruption like the traffic delays faced at German borders following that country’s decision to increase security measures in September. The decision by France follows concern over public safety, including threats of terrorism and criminal activity related to illegal migration.
Normally, people passing between countries in the Schengen zone can move freely without passport checks, but France and Germany have taken advantage of a provision that allows countries to impose temporary increased controls for a set period, in response to specific circumstances.
This means that travelers crossing borders with France may asked to show identification such as a passport or National ID Card.
